Starting The Northern Swing

It’s June and it’s hot here in Arizona. Over the past few weeks I have kept very busy on the guiding front and fished one local tournament on Lake Roosevelt. One thing I love about fishing at home in the summer heat is the fishing can be very predictable. When temperature highs are reaching into the 100’s, the bass have to eat early and often to retain their weight.

I’ve had the pleasure of fishing with many of my favorite repeat clients on guide trips over the past month. It’s always nice to catch up and rip some lips with you all.. Last weekend, I fished a local team tournament with my good friend Nic McMurry. After fishing unfamiliar water’s for a couple months, it was fun to play on the “home field” for a change. We caught some nice fish on a mix of topwater baits, dropshot rigs, and Carolina rigged Power Lizards. Our final weight was 14.78 lbs., which put us second place. Confidence is so important in fishing bass tournaments. So often one tournament big or small, can parlay itself into a run of good finishes. I am hoping to use this small event as a springboard back into fishing with the confidence I started the Bass Master season with.

Over the next few days, the goal is going to be getting organized for the upcoming Elite Series Tournament on the Mississippi River. I’ll be gone for a couple weeks, so I need to inspect everything from the boat and truck to my tackle. After the event, I’ll be driving strait to New York then Detroit to pre-practice two more events. It takes more than a day to research what’s ahead and be prepared with fishing licenses and whatever else I might need. My next scheduled speaking event will be at the Gander Mountain in Lacrosse next Sunday afternoon. I hope to see some of you there!
